Pasadena, CA — I was able to capture a lot of great moments at my first Rose Bowl Game, here are my 10 favorites of all 274 I kept.
I took 1,443 photos throughout the course of the entire game across all 4 cameras I was using and I chose my top 10 to share a little story behind each.
My Top 10:
#10
QB Sam Darnold was able to stay protected from the Penn State defense, thanks to his offensive line but this is my favorite since it shows one of the very few moments that he was chased outside of the pocket.
#9
RB Saquon Barkley has great vision and quickness and it is what makes him so explosive. I really liked this one of him looking downfield, surveying the defense prior to a play where he carried the ball for 16 yds and got the first down.
#8
Tournament of Roses President Brad Ratliff handing over the Leishman Trophy to USC HC Clay Helton.
#7
PK Matt Boermeester kicking the game winning field goal for the University of Southern California in the 103rd Rose Bowl Game.
#6
RB Saquon Barkley breaking a tackle in this slow-shutter photo taken during the 4th quarter of the 103rd Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, California.
#5
Traveler VII, ridden by Hector Aguilar, in his last appearance before Traveler IX replaces him for the 2017 season of USC Football.
#4
DB Leon McQuay III intercepts Trace McSorley’s pass to Chris Godwin in the 4th Quarter of the 103rd Rose Bowl Game, enabling an opportunity for USC to win it with a field goal.
#3
WR Chris Godwin just prior to catching a pass from Trace McSorley that was tipped up into the air by Iman Marshall. He would go on to run that catch for a touchdown, putting Penn State up 35-27 with 11:27 left in the 3rd quarter.
#2
WR Chris Godwin runs down the sideline for a touchdown as a fan on the sideline gives him the bird.
This photo is my #2 favorite simply because it cracks me up. This (USC) fan couldn’t believe that Chris Godwin caught that pass and thought of nothing better to do than flip him off as he ran by.
#1 Matt Boermeester
My absolute favorite, without a doubt.
This is Matt Boermeester wreathed in thought, staring at the 49-49 scoreboard before minutes later, going on to kick the game winning field goal at the 103rd Rose Bowl Game.
Tighter crop:
What I love most about it is the focus shown, both that his eyes are in focus and him thinking.
Captured with the Canon EOS 1DX MKII paired with the 600mm f/4L IS II USM, it doesn’t get any better than that.
